The Prague Spring.

In 1947 (aged 19), influenced by his father, a musicologist, Kundera attends music and composition lectures at Charles University in Prague, but transfers to the Prague Academy of Performing Arts to study film.

Fascinated by communism, he joined the communist party at the age of 19, but was repeatedly expelled (1950), re-entered (1956), expelled (1962), and expelled (1970), devoting himself to communist reform in Czechoslovakia.

In 1968 (age 40), Kundera is caught up in a historical event called the Prague Spring.

It reveals its presence with the spring of destiny.

The Prague Spring is a political and cultural liberalization movement that occurred from January 5 to August 21.

Czech leader Alexander Dubฤek is pushing through a series of reforms to create 'socialism with a human face', including easing censorship, expanding freedom of expression, and supporting political and economic reforms.

However, the Prague Spring was cut short in August 1968 when the Soviet Union and other Warsaw Pact countries invaded Czechoslovakia to quell the reforms.

The Prague Spring comes to an end and authoritarian rule returns.

In the aftermath of the invasion, Kundera's work, along with that of many other intellectuals and artists, came under censorship and scrutiny by the authorities.

Disillusioned with the communist regime, Kundera left Czechoslovakia in 1975 (age 47).

Kundera reflects his experiences during the Prague Spring and the subsequent invasion in his works, and themes include individual freedom, political oppression, and the complexity of human existence under authoritarian regimes.
