After the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire in 1453, Italy struggled to establish a strong national monarchy and remained in a delicate equilibrium with only city-states divided into various regions.

Republic of Venice (Sforza).
Duchy of Milan (Sforza).
Kingdom of Naples (Aragonese, Spain).
The Papal States of Rome.
During his initial period in Florence:
In 1466, at the age of 15, Da Vinci began his apprenticeship at the Verrocchio workshop, where he acquired realistic techniques grounded in the observation of nature. This workshop, also known as Andrea del Verrocchio's Workshop, played a vital role in Florence's cultural prosperity as a hub of artistic innovation and collaboration, nurturing and honing the talents of Leonardo and other gifted Renaissance artists. Andrea del Verrocchio (1435-1488) was a versatile artist known for his excellence in various arts, including painting, sculpture, and metalwork. Landayo and Botticelli were among the artists who inspired Da Vinci to paint.
In 1470, at the age of 19, Da Vinci collaborated with his teacher Verrocchio on "The Baptism of Christ" (completed by 1472). Verrocchio, with the support of the Medici family, made a name for himself in the realms of sculpture and goldsmithing. In 1472, at 21 years old, Da Vinci joined the Painter's Guild.
In 1478, a failed coup d'état was launched against the Medici family, leading to the banishment of the Pazzi family from Florence. In 1479, at the age of 28, Da Vinci became independent from the Verrocchio workshop.
Florence, often regarded as the cradle of the Renaissance, holds immense historical significance for Leonardo da Vinci. Key attractions in Florence include the Uffizi Gallery, which houses many of his works, including the renowned "Annunciation," and the Leonardo da Vinci Museum, showcasing his inventions.
