In 343 B.C., Aristotle (B.C.384-322) spends four years in Meiza educating Prince Alexander (13 years old).

Alexander dreams of unifying the Greek polis and the Macedonian Empire, not stopping there, but creating a vast empire that will stretch from the Mediterranean to India.

In 336 B.C., Philip II of Macedon is assassinated by Pausanias, and Alexander ascends to the throne at the age of 20.

Using the army his father has assembled, he begins a war with Persia.

He wins the battles of Granicus in 334 B.C. and Issus in 333 B.C.

In 332 B.C., he even captures Egypt and seizes control of the Mediterranean.

 

On October 1, 331 B.C., 200,000 Persian soldiers faces off against 47,000 Macedonian soldiers on the Gaugamela plain in the upper reaches of the Tigris River.

Gaugamela is now Arbela in northern Iraq.

Darius III (44 years old), who places cavalry and mercenaries on both sides and chariots and Indian battle elephants at the front, aims to launch a counterattack with the elite infantry and archers in the center.

Alexander the Great (25 years old) places a double phalanx of heavy infantry in the center and lines up light infantry and cavalry on both sides, standing at the forefront of the right cavalry.

Alexander suppresses the Persian chariots and riders with a first retreat and encirclement tactic.

 

The second tactic is to use the decoy of the cavalry on the right, arranged at a 45-degree angle, to split the Persian cavalry and the central infantry.

When there is a gap, hidden heavy infantry behind the Macedonian cavalry appears and surrounds the Persian cavalry.

As Alexander's cavalry retreats to the second line, they suddenly turns around and attacks the right rear, advancing towards Darius' headquarters.

In 330 B.C., Darius III (B.C.380-330) is assassinated by Bessus, and the Persian Empire collapses.

 

The infantry defense tactics of the phalanx and the cavalry's flanking attack tactics are used again by Genghis Khan.

기원전 343년, 아리스토텔레스(B.C.384-322)는 4년간 미에자에서 알렉산드로스 왕자(13세)의 교육을 맡는다. 알렉산드로스는 스승과 부친이 꿈꾼 그리스의 폴리스와 마케도니아 제국의 통일에 그치지 않고, 지중해에서 인도에 이르는 광대한 제국을 구상한다.

 

기원전 336년, 마케도니아의 필리포스 2세가 파우사니아스에게 피살되자 20세에 왕위에 오른다. 부친이 잡아놓은 군제를 기반으로 페르시아와 전쟁을 개시한다. 기원전 334년 그라니코스 전투와 기원전 333년 이소스 전투에서 승리하고, 기원전 332년 이집트마저 점령해 지중해의 제해권을 빼앗는다.

 

기원전 331년 10월 1일, 티그리스 강 상류의 가우가멜라 평원에 20만의 페르시아 군과 4만 7천 명의 마케도니아군이 대치한다. 가우가멜라는 현재 이라크 북부의 아르빌이다. 좌우에 기병과 용병을 배치하고 좌우전면에 전차와 인도 전투코끼리를 포진시킨 다리우스 3세(44세)는 중앙의 최정예 보병대·궁수로 대반격을 노린다. 중앙에 이중의 중장보병 팔랑크스Phalanx를 배치하고 좌우에 경장보병과 기병으로 전열을 세운 알렉산드로스 대왕(25세)은 우측 기마대의 선봉에 선다.

 

알렉산드로스는 1차 후퇴와 포위 전술로 페르시아의 전차와 기수를 제압한다. 2차 전술은 45도로 배치한 우측 기병의 유인책으로 페르시아 기병과 중앙 본진 보병대를 갈라놓는 것이다. 틈이 생기면 마케도니아 기병대 뒤에 은닉한 경장보병이 출몰하여 페르시아 기병을 에워싼다. 제2선으로 물러선 알렉산드로스의 기병대가 급선회하여 우측 후방을 급습하고 다리우스 본진으로 진격한다. 예상치 못한 마자에우스 페르시아 기병대의 좌측 돌파로 중앙의 팔랑크스가 수세에 몰리자, 알렉산드로스는 파르메니온이 이끄는 좌익에 병력을 집중시킨다.

 

3차 전술은 본진에 대한 총공세이다. 마케도니아의 우회공격에 페르시아 최정예 중장보병대가 무너지고 다리우스가 도주하자 마자에우스는 페르시아 본진으로 퇴각한다. 알렉산드로스는 혼돈에 빠진 페르시아 본진에 총공세를 펴 전세를 뒤집는다. 기원전 330년 다리우스 3세(B.C.380-330)는 베수스에게 살해당하고 페르시아제국은 멸망한다. 팔랑크스 보병 방진법과 기병의 우회 급습전술은 칭키스칸이 다시 쓴다. 데이비드 벵슨 목사에 따르면 칭기스칸의 전생은 알렉산드로스이다.
