Dwelling in the peaceful abiding. The Diamond Sutra, Verse 9.

 

We permeate into the Diamond Sutra in English.

 

“What do you think, Subhuti? Does the Stream-Winner think, ‘I am on the realm of a Stream-Enterer’?”

Subhuti replies, “No indeed, Lord, And why? Because he means to enter enlightenment, but there is no place to enter. He is called a ‘Stream-Winner’, not to be tied to form, sound, smell, taste, touch, or object of mind.”

“What do you think, Subhuti? Does the Once-Returner think, ‘I am on the realm of an Once-Returner’?”

Subhuti replies, “No indeed, Lord, And why? Because he only refers to going and coming once more, and since there is no going and coming, he is called an ‘Once-Returner’.”

“What do you think, Subhuti? Does the Never-Returner think, ‘I am on the realm of a Non-Returner’?”

Subhuti replies, “No indeed, Lord. And why? He only means not coming to this world again, but because there is any Never-Returnship, he is called a Non-Returner.”

“What do you think, Subhuti? Does the Arhat think, ‘I am on the realm of an Arhatship’?”

Subhuti replies, “No indeed, Lord. And why? Because he really only refers to the realization that there is no dharma.

If, Lord, it would occur to him, ‘I am on the realm of an Arhatship’, then he is caught up in the notion of ‘me’, distinguishing, differentiating, and lifespan.

Lord, you says that I am the highest Arhat among those who dwell in the peaceful realm without even anguish, free from desires.

And yet, Lord, I do not think, ‘I am an Arhat free from desires,’

If, Lord, it would occur to me, ‘I am on the realm of an Arhatship’, the Tathagata would not say, ‘Subhuti is a person who dwells in the peaceful abiding.’

However, since Subhuti does not really do anything, so he is only called ‘a dweller in Peace’.”
