The two kinds of thinking.

 

(1) Concerning the two forms of thinking. What I have read is like this.

 

We have two forms of thinking.

One is directed thinking and the other is dream or phantastic thinking.

The first is working for communication with speech elements.

With a single purpose of communication, it combines the natural sounds into the meanings and generates the intellect.

A result of cooperation of sound and sign interchanges is a production of abstract thought.

Scholasticism raises the symbol of speech, the word, to an absolute meaning.

It gives to the mind a dialectic training in directed thinking.

Scholasticism is the mother of scienticfic attitude.

Science and the technic fostered by it are the most beautiful expression of directed thinking.

Language is the register of tradition, and the deposit of all the gains made by the genius of individuals.

Phantasitic thinking works spontaneously with reminiscences.

It is a characteristic of antiquity.

As soon as the directed thinking ceases, we replace it with phantasies and are given over to the phantastic thinking.

Waking dreams and the dreams fall in the realm of the conscious and the unconscious.

There is a wholly unconscious phantasy system in the split-off complex above the dreams.

When we are in sleep or dreams, we pass through the whole thought of earliest humanity.

The products arising from the unconscious are the mythical.

The mythical tradition reveals a thought common to humanity, and once more is rejuvenated.

The myths correspond to a mass dream of the whole nations.

The myth is a fragment of the infantile soul-life of the people, and the dream is the myth of the individual.

Every Greek of the classical era carries in himself a fragment of the Oedipus.

Every German carries a fragment of Faust.

 

(2) Ease into ‘The two kinds of thinking’ with Nietzsche’s thoughts.

 

In dreams, relic of humanity has been passed down from generation to generation remain intact.

It becomes the basis for higher rational functions.

The dreams take us back to earlier states of human culture.

It acts as a restorative for the brain, which is tired of skilled thinking during the day.

The thought of taking causes and effects seriously is a recent development in human history.
