At this time, Subhuti asks the Buddha, “Lord, how should I name this sutra, and how should I bear it in mind?”
The Buddha says to Subhuti, “This sutra is called ‘The Diamond that cuts through illusion’ to hold it in mind.
And why? Subhuti, the transcendent understading which the Tathagata has taught is not, in fact, the highest wisdom, just being named it.
What do you think, Subhuti, has the Tathagata ever spoken of the Dharma?”
Subhuti replies, “Nothing to speak, Lord.”
“What do you think, Subhuti, are there many particles of dust in this world system of
1,000 million worlds?
Subhuti replies, “Very many, Lord.”
“Subhuti, all particles of dust, the Tathagata says, are not particles of dust, only being named ‘particles of dust’. And the world the Tathagata has taught is, in fact, not this world system, just named ‘the world’.
What do you think, Subhuti, can the Tathagata be recognized by means of the thirty-two marks?
“No, indeed. Nothing to see, Lord.
And why? Because those thirty-two marks taught by the Tathagata are not essentially marks, only named it.”
“Subhuti, even if some man or woman were to give up their life as an act of generosity as many times as there are grains of sand in the river Ganges, and someone else accepts even one stanza of four lines in this sutra explaining to others, the strength of this virtue would be far greater than that.”
