The New Testament records the birth of Jesus, stating that "what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus" (Matthew 1:20-21).

The name Jesus means "savior."

However, God promises Immanuel, not Jesus.

 

Immanuel means "God(el) is with(im) us(manu)."

The Hebrew word "El" in Immanuel refers to the "man from heaven" in Genesis 1.

Isaiah 7:14 states, "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."

This verse causes controversy known as the "Alma and Betulah Controversy.“

In Hebrew, there is a unique word for virgin, "Betulah," whereas the word used by Isaiah, "Alma," could refer to a virgin or a non-virgin woman.

 

In 734 BC, the Northern Kingdom of Israel threatens to attack Jerusalem, causing King Ahaz of Judah to fear.

Isaiah's son, Shear-Jashub, predicts Israel's downfall within 65 years and urges the king to seek signs from a high place.

Ahaz makes the mistake of seeking help from the Assyrian king Tiglath-Pileser III (745-727 BC) and refuses to test God with cunning humility.

Despite this, Isaiah reveales the sign of Immanuel.

Isaiah prophesies that the lands of the Aramean king Rezin and the Israelite king Pekah (740-732 BC) will be destroyed and announces the birth of Immanuel by a young woman.

Immanuel symbolizes Jesus.

In 722 BC, the Assyrian king Sargon II destroyed Israel, long before the birth of Jesus.

Therefore, Jesus could not reject evil and choose good (Isaiah 7:15).

Moreover, it is impossible for a virgin to conceive (Isaiah 7:14).

 

So what does it mean for a virgin to conceive?

A virgin is a person who has preserved spiritual purity.

One conceiving the truth, becomes Immanuel, and becomes one with God.

He connects us with God,

He realizes his own self nature, living with benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom.

 

 

처녀가 잉태한 것은 무엇인가.

신약성서는 예수의 탄생을 기록한다.

“마리아에게 잉태된 자는 성령으로 된 것이다.

아들을 낳으리니 이름을 예수라 하라.”

(마1:20·21)

예수는 구원한다는 의미이다.

하나님은 예수가 아닌 임마누엘 Immanuel을 약속한다.

 

임마누엘은 ‘하나님el이 우리와manu 함께하심im’이란 뜻이다.

엘el은 창세기 1장의 ‘하늘에서 온 사람’을 나타낸다.

“처녀가 잉태하여 아들을 낳으리니 그 이름을 임마누엘이라 하리라.”

(이사야7:14)

이 구절은 처녀virgin 논쟁 일명 ‘알마와 베툴라 논쟁’을 유발시킨다.

히브리어에는 처녀를 의미하는 고유의 어휘 베툴라가 존재한다.

이사야가 표기한 알마alma는 처녀 혹은 처녀가 아닌 여자를 가리킬 수 있다.

 

B.C.734년 북왕국 이스라엘은 예루살렘을 치려한다.

유다의 왕 아하스(재위:B.C736-720)는 두려움에 떤다.

이사야의 아들 스알야습은 65년 내에 이스라엘이 망함을 알린다.

깊고 높은 데서 징조를 구하라 권한다.

아하스는 앗수르 왕 디글랏 빌레셀 3세(B.C.745-727)에게 원병을 청하는 실수를 저지른다.

교활한 겸손으로 하나님을 시험치 않겠다 변명한다.

아하스의 거절에도 이사야는 임마누엘의 징조를 드러내 보인다.

아람 왕 르신과 이스라엘 왕 베가(재위:B.C.740-732)의 땅이 망하리라 예견한다.

동정녀에 의한 임마누엘의 탄생을 알린다.

임마누엘은 예수의 상징이다.

B.C.722년 앗수르의 사르곤 2세는 이스라엘을 멸한다.

이스라엘은 예수가 태어나기도 훨씬 전에 이미 사라진다.

따라서 예수는 악을 버리고 선을 택할 수 없다(이사야7:15).

더욱이 처녀가 잉태하여 아들을 낳는 다는 것은 불가능하다(이사야7:14).

 

그렇다면 처녀가 잉태한 것은 무엇인가?

처녀는 영靈적인 순결을 지킨 사람이다.

진리를 잉태한다.

하나님의 형상을 닮은 임마누엘이다.

하나님과 한 몸을 이룬다.

본성本性을 깨우쳐 인의예지仁義禮智로 산다.

예수는 하나님과 이어주고 임마누엘은 하나님과 하나된다.
